    Look behind the black pawns, on rank 8.

  2. A protected queen

    Find a checking square protected by your king.

  3. Rook and king

    Your king already controls g8 and g7.

  4. The rook ladder

    One rook must keep guarding rank 7.

  5. Rook supports queen

    Connect queen and rook on the g-file.

  6. Capture the blocker

    Find the black piece on the bishop’s diagonal.

  7. Queen and bishop

    Which black pawn is guarded by Bc4?

  8. Smothered mate

    The king is surrounded by its own pieces.

  9. A pawn finishes

    Moving the pawn opens the bishop’s diagonal.

    The checking piece need not be the piece you move.
